A perspective from Bulembu – By Simone Demers-Collins

My parents (Margo & Tom) and my mom’s cousin (Simone & Pat) are currently in Bulembu as voluntourists!  I wanted to post one of Simone’s notes that she sent today (more to come soon!):

They say that food is one of the great unifying elements of people… and this is truly evident in this visit to Bulembu’s children.  From the house visit to the children, neighbours to Jacek’s blue/brown house, to the few who approached us as we waited outside the dining hall, and those who greeted us this morning at the elementary school assembly, the common theme was food, or more specifically chocolate.

While picture albums provided to the choir members who visited Canada feature horseback riding, poster making, amongst many other activities, the children are constantly greeting Margo with ‘you are the mother of the chocolate lady’.  It appears that the morning spent at Jacek’s Chocolate Couture appealed to all of their senses – yes, there are great memories of the tastiness of the chocolates themselves. But as important are the aromas associated with the chocolate-making session, the eye-appeal of the Bulembu collection, and the tactile experience of creating their own special ‘treat’.  And that Jacqui demonstrated, especially to the girls, a world of opportunities of which they knew nothing!
