About Mark Davis:

Mark Davis’s third solo album, Eliminate the Toxins, was nominated for the 2012 Polaris Prize. Exclaim called the album “grandiose, blissful, hypnotic and heartbreaking.” And, in the words of Herohill, “I can’t imagine too many bands rallying to knock Eliminate the Toxins from the summit of 2011ʹs Canadian roots mountain.” The album charted for four months on the National Campus and Community Radio Top 30 and Folk/Roots/Blues charts, and on the !earshot Top 50.

Mark’s 2007 release, Mistakes I Meant To Make, was called a “tour de force” (Penguin Eggs, Exclaim), “the roots release of the year” (Eye), and “stunning” (Uncut), and prompted radiofreecanuckistan to call Mark “one of the most under-rated songwriters in the world.” From that album, the song “By the Time” was called “one of the most beautiful songs of the century” (Le Cri Du Coyote). Mark became CBC Galaxie’s most-played Canadian roots artist of 2007, spent several weeks atop the NCCR Folk/Roots/Blues chart, and made the year’s top 10 lists of both the NCCR and Exclaim. Mark’s fourth solo album, Just As Somewhere will be released in 2019 by his label, Weatherbelle.

Mark also leads heavy wave duo, Concealer, on bass and vocals. Concealer’s debut, fêted:fetid (2015) was the inaugural co-release for both Weatherbelle and experimental indie artist Rae Spoon’s label, Coax. fêted:fetid charted for six months on NCCR Top 30 and Electronic charts and on the !earshot Top 50. The album won DJ/Electronic Recording of the Year at the Edmonton Music Awards. Concealer’s second album, It’s Immaterial, will be released in 2019.

Along with Shuyler Jansen (Kacy & Clayton, Ryan Boldt), Mark also guided the band Old Reliable through nearly 25 years and four recordings.

Mark has shared billings or stages with Guy Clark, Alejandro Escovedo, Wilson Pickett, K’naan, Fred Eaglesmith, Kathleen Edwards, Chad VanGaalen, The Great Lake Swimmers, Gurf Morlix, Ray Condo, The Sadies, Women, Richard Buckner, and Pieta Brown, to name a few.
In the studio, he has collaborated with Joey Burns and John Convertino (Calexico, Giant Sand), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Corby Lund, Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo, Wilco, Freakwater), Chris Dadge (Alvvays, Chad Van Gaalen), Scott Munro (Preoccupations, Viet Cong, Women), Jay Crocker (JOYFULTALK) and Mike Caldwell (the smalls). He has contributed music to several films and television series.

As an Arts Instructor at The Robin Hood Association, Mark produced All-In Music and New Day Dawning – two full albums of songs co-written and performed by musicians with intellectual disabilities. He is a recipient of the City of Edmonton Salute to Excellence Committee Performance Award “for receiving significant recognition for furthering artistic practice” and was a nominee for The Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Courage to Innovate Award.
